New Haven invites its community members to start 2016 off by making a difference for local people in need. The New Haven Police department is teaming up with the American Red Cross, asking people to donate blood at their blood drive this Thursday, December 31st. From 8am-12:45pm, the drive will take place at the police headquarters on Union Ave. If you’ve never given blood before, the American Red Cross has a great website that explains why such donations are important, as well as what you can expect if you decide to do so.
In addition, New Haven is advocating a fundraising event through the Elm City Parks Conservancy, the Polar Plunge! Taking place on Friday morning, from 11am-2pm, this New Year’s tradition is part of the First Day New Haven Winter Festival at Lighthouse Point Park.
Brave souls will jump in the water and have a great time taking tours to the top of the lighthouse, partake in an incredible brunch, warm up in the hot tubs, and enjoy other festivities. The cost is $10 for brunch alone or $25 for the plunge and brunch. More information on the 2016 Polar Plunge is available here and here.
All proceeds go towards the Elm City Parks Conservancy (ECPC), a not-for-profit parks advocacy organization serving the New Haven parks system. Their mission is “to strengthen public awareness of and participation in the city’s parks.”
