Music is in the air in New Haven this month! All around the city great musical events are taking place this September.
On September 16th at 12:30pm and September 20th at 2pm, Haven String Quartet will have a “Playing Images” concert. The two events are hosted by Music Haven, a non-profit classical music organization. The first will take place at the Yale Art Gallery (1111 Chapel St., New Haven). On Sept. 20, at 2 p.m., the quartet marks National Hispanic Heritage Month, performing works by Piazzolla, Alvarez and D’Rivera at Fair Haven Branch Library (182 Grand Ave., New Haven).
On September 25th, Brooklyn-based baritone Gregory Porter, who won the 2014 Grammy for Best Jazz Vocal Album, will perform at Southern Connecticut State University’s Lyman Center. In the past few years, Porter has worked with everyone from gospel singer Anita Wilson to electronica act Disclosure. https://tickets.southernct.edu
Or if you’re looking for something a bit more relaxed and low key, there are many local bars and restaurants that host live musical events for your enjoyment. Stella Blues on Crown Street has various musical guests every weekend, and every Tuesday is open Mic night.
Café 9 is another great place to check out for live music. A bar and grill that hosts live musical events, Café 9 has been collaborating with area businesses to promote other art and music happenings in the neighborhood. Known for blending awesome local bands and amazing national (and international) acts for decades, Café 9 is one of New Haven’s best when it comes to musical acts.
